375 patients on one day!

Geduldig warteten die Menschen bis sie an die Reihe kamen

For her visit this year, Gabi Lingenfelser-Lutz, our deputy chairperson, collaborated with Recky Awino Kyalo (our on-location coordinator) to organise the now 3rd “medical camp” in Mbale (Kenya).

At these camps, people from around the region are given the opportunity to undergo a medical examination and receive treatment.

This time around, 375 (!) people came to the “medical camp” – many with acute illnesses.

The feet had to be disinfected before medical treatment

The enormous demand could only be met, because there were other helpers present, in addition to Recky and Gabi, who assisted the doctor, pharmacist and nurses.

In addition to the usual recurring diseases, it was striking that there were especially a lot of infections – particularly on children’s feet – on this occasion. These were caused by parasites (jigger or chigoe flea), which primarily appear on feet. The main causes were the partly unhygienic conditions in the huts and the lack of shoes.

Also the youngest get medical treatment

All of the children and adults who attended the “medical camp” were examined and treated. Where it was found to be necessary, the living huts were disinfected in the following days. Furthermore, some of the sick children received closed shoes.

Our goal now is to provide all of the indigent children in the region with shoes promptly.

Moreover, we wish to ensure that the ill continue to receive treatment.
